Poetry Project: Connections essay

       Everyone may have a reason of not having the courage to do certain things. People may be afraid of certain things and may not want to go up and about to try them. Courage is an important factor in a person's life, without it there would be no changes and people would not be able to get what they want. It can help you to meet more people, and it can help you to try new things that you were once afraid of.
      There is a connection between all of my pieces, the connection is that in every one's life there may be one or a couple of things that can frighten them, because of other people or other people's examples. Because of that reason some may not be confident as much. There may always be a point in a person's life where they face their fears to help a person or maybe just to do it to boost up their self-confidence.  There is a connection of how people can have hurts or sufferings and not have the courage to get back back up and try to start over. There may be struggles that bring you down and keep you from speaking up and making a difference.
        Courage is the ability to do what frightens one and the strength in the face of pain of grief. So, instead of showing weakness and fear all a person needs is a little bit of courage. Courage will not hold you back from doing the things you love to do, but there are some things that just hold people back from doing them.

Poem 1: famouspoetsandpoems.com

  I Mark Your Courage  by Ivan Donn Creswell
I had no profound feelings of shock or surprise
to those matter-of-fact revelations
which spelled the end of this chapter of your life.
It was, as you put it, too late for recriminations,
and the horrendous realities could be no worse
for having faced them.

I mark your courage in that moment of admission,
when your soul cried out in sympathetic pain,
worn thin by abrasions of self-imprisonment
and total subjugation to providence.
You did not disguise your frailty
as lesser men are apt by schemes
which shorten their horizons, elaborate their dreams.

That you are a molecule conniving in
the physics of human chemistry
is no slight upon your status,
without dynamic you are less
a man of cloth than habit claims you be;
And martyr to ascription is the poorer fate
than anticipated condemnation from
a selfless breach of faith.

Ordinary passions do not progress beyond
the continuum of priestly enlightenment; we share
a whole psychology of man's experience
as our eternal life. Its unitary expression
is no greater than the measureless sum,
and the sum is no value less than life itself.
No enlightened soul can judge another man
for passions of humanity; the sentence of conscience
is an arbitrary punishment in which we all delight.

I am no herdsman fearing ill in ceaseless care
of herded sheep, nor could I choose
entanglement with such an entity; your flock
survives as do your prayers, and will survive
long past your flight. You earned their trust
in episodes of heart and light, and keep
its privileged charter frozen out of time,
embalmed in a perfect past.
As one we mourn your passing.

    I think that this poem is about how there are so many reasons why people do not have the courage to do things that they are not used to doing. Evocative language (underlined) are words in this poem that describe what people feel which maybe sadness and other feelings. There are figurative comparisons such as "we share a whole psychology of man's experience as our eternal life." This means that what one person experiences, everyone else does to. which means that people almost does the same things as everyone else. This poem refers to all the pains and sufferings that a person can have. There are so many things that can make you scared and make you not want to do things. Due to all of those things a person can lose their courage to stand up and go up and about to do the things that frighten them.

Poem 2: poemhunter.com
Courage- Harihara Sudhahar Ramamoorthy
Many are the troubles we are confronted with,
Life is no more than a troublesome myth;
Reality is so bizarre and weak,
Sadness and fear has reached its peak;

What we lack is the courage to start;
Yet what we need is just a strong living heart,
Gather your wits all in one part,
And face that evil killing dart;

Whatever will happen, whatever it will take,
You are not going to let it break;
Cross the line and break your fate,
And start to try loving what you hate;

You have the right to decide your life' course,
But be ready it may be all hollow and hoarse;
Try all that you can but dont give up,
If in the end, you want the winning cup;

The courage is all that you need,
In your life, that will be the sowing seed,
It may put you in the lead,
But never will it be the 'weed';

If you think you are missing something,
It’s the courage, the courage, in your ears it will ring.

     I think that this poem is about what courage can do to your life, and that it can make a difference if you try. Evocative language(underlined)  are words that describe what life can have if we don’t have the courage.There is a metaphor “The courage is all that you need, In your life, that will be the sowing seed.” This means that courage is all you need to be happy and not regret doing things you’ve always wanted to do. This poem is about how life can give you troubles, but you do whatever it takes to be strong and not hold back from doing the things you want to do. We dodge the bad things and we don’t let those things bother us, so that way we can do what we want to do.

Poem 3:famouspoetsandpoems.com
Courage- Anne Sexton
It is in the small things we see it.
The child's first step,
as awesome as an earthquake.
The first time you rode a bike,
wallowing up the sidewalk.
The first spanking when your heart
went on a journey all alone.
When they called you crybaby
or poor or fatty or crazy
and made you into an alien,
you drank their acid
and concealed it.

Later,
if you faced the death of bombs and bullets
you did not do it with a banner,
you did it with only a hat to
comver your heart.
You did not fondle the weakness inside you
though it was there.
Your courage was a small coal
that you kept swallowing.
If your buddy saved you
and died himself in so doing,
then his courage was not courage,
it was love; love as simple as shaving soap.

Later,
if you have

KC3 Draft

                                                    Two sides of paradise - Healthcare
     Healthcare in Hawaii can help those in need, but due to shipping of medication and the shortage of expertise the cost of it is high. Not everyone in Hawaii can get healthcare, only those with certain conditions are granted insurance. Those who are HIPAA eligible are guaranteed insurance. HIPAA is a federal law that allows people who are in a healthcare plan with other employees, to search for another insurance. Others may be protected by COBRA, which is a federal law that allows an employer to stay with a group plan until they are done working. Some health insurance plans also have renewed in Hawaii. That means insurance companies have to continue to cover a person as long as they are paying the company. If the person wants to for example move to another healthcare insurance and gets sick, the company will not allow them to move. The services that healthcare insurances have to cover include: mammograms for women over forty years old, care for diabetes, alcohol and drug treatment services, and care for mental health conditions.
    In 2006, the average price for an individual with healthcare in Hawaii was $437 a month. For a family it was $747 a month.  An individual with no managed healthcare payed $563 a month. For a family it was $936 a month.
   Some people in Hawaii work for businesses that offer healthcare, instead of paying the full price for it. Those businesses will continue to pay 98.5 percent of the costs, which is higher than any state. Hawaii's Prepaid Healthcare act, which passed in 1974, requires private employers to offer health insurance to employees who work for more than 20 hours a week and for more than four weeks. In Hawaii about 92 percent of citizens are insured. But because of the cost, employers are often offered many part-time jobs instead of full time. Healthcare costs rose 94.2 percent, while people were earning only 25.7 percent over a nine year period.
   By the year 2020, people are expected to pay $20,000 a year. In 2014 health insurance will be required. For those who are not insured because they can't afford coverage they would have to pay the full prices for prescription drugs. A change that was made to health insurance companies, was that for people to stay under their parents' insurance until they turn 26.
    Hawaii's hospitals have lost more than $400 million in the years 2007 to 2008, since not everyone has paid there costs. Since not everyone pays their doctors, that means that Hawaii loses their physicians, and specialists. With that being said it will be hard for those who have certain health problems and will have to pay for plane tickets going to different parts of the world to get the care that they need.
     The Patient and Affordable Care Act are for those who have had health issues and need healthcare.
The Pre-existing Condition Insurance plan, is not public but those who want to have this plan will still have to pay monthly prices.  Citizens still have to follow the regulations just like regular healthcare. People would still have to pay the same amount that people without previous health issues pay. Monthly costs will be $215 for ages 0-34, $258 for ages 35 to 44, $330 for ages 45 to 54, $459 for ages 55 and up. With this plan a person would have to pay $5,950 a year.
     Since healthcare in Hawaii is high, people look for the best plans as possible. With other things that they have to pay for, some people work multiple jobs. Not a lot of people can afford other things including healthcare, so they sacrifice their time to get what is worth getting for their family and their self.

Querencia Final

         I can feel the light wind blow across my face, and I can hear the birds chirping when I wake up in the morning. My mom comes into my room and says "breakfast is ready!",  I run into the dining room and see what hot meal my mom has prepared for me. As soon as I am finished  I walk to the window and open up the curtain, as soon as I do that, a ray of sun lights the room up.  I get ready and see what this day has in store for me.  As I go and wake up my grandmother, I go pass a hallway full of pictures, that bring me to the past. Looking at photos that I took with family and friends,  I want to go back to that day and relive the occasion that was being celebrated. To the loud laughs, kids screaming as they play games that they make up, it reminds me how happy I am to be around family.
     When I'm in my room doing homework or projects, I can hear my named being yelled. Running to whoever needs me, my grandmother, mother, or father tell me that they need help with all their house work. Washing the dirty dishes, folding the piled high clothes, vacuuming all the rooms, and fixing papers that are all over the place. As I help out I can remember all the things I used to do as a child, from mixing different items around the house without getting caught and playing hide and seek with cousins. I can remember the places where my uncle would put me in "time out", and me falling asleep so I could get out of it.
      But whenever I have a bad day, I can always go home to the feeling of comfort from family members or friends.  My home changed over the years from my child hood to now. My grandfather has extended his home after all his children were born, but whenever someone comes to visit there will always be room for everyone.  My mother's father and his brothers have built this house for everyone to enjoy. This home will always allow me to be safe, with the people and environment it has been in.

Comfort Food Essay

     Pancit is our family's favorite dish to eat at parties, special occasions, or just simply all the time. Walking through the kitchen doorway, I could smell the mixtures of vegetables, chicken, and noodles.
I remember taking car rides to the noodle factory and market to buy all the ingredients we needed. As soon as we got home I would always rush upstairs and my dad would prepare everything we needed. I could hear the vegetables being chopped, the chicken boiling, and oil splashing.
     "Why is eating pancit so special" I asked my dad. "If you eat the long noodles you'll have a long life to live." My dad also had said that ever  since my grandfather was young he learned how to cook, he would make the best pancit anyone could ever have. After my grandfather has passed, my father has carried on the tradition to make everyone's favorite.
     I remember my dad calling me in to shred the hot chicken after it was just boiled. I would always watch my dad toss in the noodles, celery, bell pepper, carrots, and shrimp in the big bowl, as I continue to shred the piping hot chicken. After he has mixed everything together, he would put in the chicken, and would put me on his knee and he would say "toss it all together one more time." The pancit would be put into our serving dish, and the finishing touches would be topped with chopped green onions.
       "How long has this dish been in our family" I would say out loud. "Way before you were born." My mom replied. As I learn more and more about this dish, my goal is to carry it on for generation after generation. My family relatives face's would light when they would my dad bring the big dish of pancit, and would just rush to grab a plate of it. This dish has brought many memories and will create many more.

Roots and Recipes

The food that I have chosen is my dad's noodles "pancit". My grandfather has always made this dish for parties or special for my family. It's tradition was passed down to my father, and is still made to this day. My family relatives and I, have always enjoyed this dish and no matter what we will never get tired of it.
I will be interviewing my father on how he has learned from my grandfather, and how he makes this dish.
